Exercise 2 Expressive Lighting



My intentions were to recreate Michelangelo's self portrait with a much younger individual. the technique used in his portrait is called Chiaroscuro Lighting. I made sure to position my brother, Manuel, so that the light his face using the chiaroscuro technique and therefore mimicking Michelangelo's self portrait.

Lighting Director Question

I find myself disagreeing with LD. I believe a good face cream commercial would be a combination of all three types of falloffs. Perhaps starting with fast falloff and engage in a severe contrast in lighting so that it forms more of an impact. Then you can transition onto slow falloff where the darker side of the face begins to get brighter until it is completely bright (elimination of falloff). I prefer this transition for the reason that the audience has something to compare her clear face with and therefore are subject to experiencing more of an impact.

Beatles A Hard Day's Night Reaction

During the era in which the Beatles movie, A Hard Day's Night, came out, the Beatles were also featured on the cover of LIFE Magazine. It was interesting because the movie was actually published in black and white, while the magazine cover was published in full-on colors. Why was the movie published in black and white you ask? Well, it's just an effect. It is so that we, the audience, feel as though it is in the previous era where everything was indeed in black and white and colored film did not exist yet. It is so that we feel vintage. It also helps us focus more on what is happening in each scene, instead of looking at all the colors (some colors may be brighter than the others, causing us to get distracted a little). Also, the movie being in black and white is also great seeing as it is a musical, and it allows their music to stand out even more so. I love that the movie was published in black and white.

Now around the same time the black and white movie came out, so did their front page cover on LIFE magazine in color.  LIFE magazine chose to portray their cover using colors in order to change up the audiences's perspective a bit. Colors make them seem more vibrant, and more important since they went from black to white ( an older phenomena) to color ( a newer and more advanced phenomena). So it really made it seem like the Beatles were advancing in the industry (which indeed they were).

Photographer Assignment

Richard Burbridge 

Richard Burbridge was born and raised in England. This British photographer is well known for his very unique and unusual style. He has worked for huge brands such as Vogue Italia, Allure, and Dazed and Confused. He is in fact considered to be one of the top 5 fashion photographers within the UK photography market. He is also known for take a person and transforming them into glamour and something completely unexpected.


I chose Richard Burbridge because he is a well-known fashion photographer all over the world. His ideas are unique, his style is exquisite. He’s an inspiration to me and my own creativity. I am a big fan of the way he edits the coloring in his photograph. He tends to make some colors pop out more than the others, which allows are eyes to focus on that one spot.
